Glaucoma surgery is typically carried out when glaucomatous damage cannot be halted using eye pressure lowering drops, e.g. Lumigan drops. Sometimes it is done to achieve a satisfactory pressure in the eyes without eyedrops, where patients find eyedrop instillation difficult.

With modern techniques, the operation is increasingly safe, with an approximate 75% success rate in terms of producing a satisfactory eye pressure without the concomitant use of eyedrops.
